Hope from the Garden

I dedicate this to my dad who was an avid gardener.

From the time I was a little girl I have always had a fascination with seeds and gardening. Perhaps it is because my dad was an avid gardener.  He had an amazing garden every summer. He had such a green thumb and he was always very generous. When I am in the garden, I think of him often.

One of the things I enjoy most is watching tiny seeds grow into flowers and vegetables. I begin in February  taking inventory of what will be needed for the new season.

Once things are assembled and the time is right the seeds are started. That's when the fun begins. It takes good soil, water, light, time and patience.

The waiting is the hard part. Watching and waiting. Making sure the seeds are moist and have light. Days pass and nothing seems to be happening but then one day those tiny seeds sprout!

This is a happy way for us to see the hope of our heavenly Father. He so tenderly watches over us every day. He will make sure we have all that we need to grow, if we ask.

As my husband and I read Proverbs this morning we saw something we hadn't notice before.

Proverbs 7:1-2 My son, keep my words, and treasure my commands within you. Keep  my commands and live; and my law as the apple of your eye.

Here is what we learned: The origin of the word translated apple is "little man," the tiny reflection one sees in another's eye.

The song,  "My Father's Eyes" by Amy Grant came to mind as I learned the meaning of this passage. I want to see with eyes of hope and compassion. None of us are yet what we will be but we need to see the good and potential of what is possible. I believe our heavenly Father is looking for His character to be reflected in us.

Perhaps that is also what Jesus meant when He said that true worshippers, worship in spirit and in truth. Not legalism but rooted and grounded in the word. It is His very breath!
