How can we know what God's will is for our lives? We can't know all of His ways. And yet we can glean insight to it by the guidelines in the Word. For example in Proverbs 3:5-6 we are taught not to trust in our own understanding but to acknowledge Him in all of our ways. In other words praying for wisdom.
Then we can understand God's will by the motivation of our heart. Love is the first test.
In Galatians 5:22-23
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
The Apostle Paul gives us a complete definition of what love really is.
I Corinthians 13:4-8;13 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever! Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.
